I thought this treatment was uneven. There is no discussion of the Frisco branch network in northeast Arkansas and its later takeover by the Burlington Northern in November 1980. The Kansas City Southern Railway has been operating in western Arkansas since 1900, but there is no word about it. Both the Missouri Pacific and the Rock Island had extensive branches in Arkansas that warranted treatment. There was also no mention of the Reader Railroad, the last steam-powered common carrier in the United States. The author mentions the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas but omits reference to the tourist excursion train service of the Arkansas & Missouri between Springdale and Van Buren.
