There are two purposes for Comments in the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture. Comments can either add information to aid in the understanding of the entry or add information that provides an alternate interpretation of the historical record.

While reading the history of Ozark and the ATU campus, I do think the person responsible for the ATU campus should be mentioned. That was Mike Womack, the state representative for Franklin, Logan, Scott, and Yell counties. Governor Orval Faubus was inclined to put the school in Ozark if Womack would support his tobacco tax. A deal was struck, and the vocational school was built. But to the dismay of folks in this area (the area where I am proud to have grown up), there is not one building on the campus named after Mike Womack—there have been others who have done far less and received recognition.
