Narratives are personal stories that help enrich the reader’s understanding of a time period, person, place, or event. These are first-person views of history taken from personal recollections, memoirs, diaries, and oral histories.

My grandfather, Simon Adler Wall, was born in Stone County, Arkansas, in 1876. He was undoubtedly named for Simon Adler. Someone had said he was named for a wealthy man in Batesville.

The name “Adler” means eagle in German, but I did not know the history of the man he was named for. The name Simon Adler has been carried forward several generations in the Wall family.

Simon Adler Wall was the son of Grandison Moses Wall from Lincoln County, Tennessee, who founded and operated the Walls Ferry across the White River in 1851.
