Elbert H. English (1816–1884) was chief justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court when the state seceded from the Union in 1861. English was also secretary at St. Johns’ College in the mid-1800s and was a prominent Arkansas Freemason. He is buried at Mount Holly Cemetery.
